Laurie Weaver says she’ll often replay in her head the last words she and her husband had. “The last thing I said to him was ‘I love you,'” recalls Laurie. In the whirlwind of grief and confusion, Laurie was informed that Sam had just renewed his driver’s license and listed himself as an organ donor. In honor of her late husband, Laurie will be a guest at a flag raising ceremony to kick off this year’s National Donate Life Month at Wyoming Medical Center.

As a two-time heart transplant recipient, when the holidays come around each year, I make a point to reflect on the second and third chance at life that I was given. I can remember many holidays when I didn’t feel well, even spending one holiday season in the hospital, waiting for my second heart transplant. I am now able to spend my holidays enjoying my family and friends and living my life to the fullest, all because two generous people said Yes to becoming organ, eye and tissue donors.

Alfred Lucero served in Vietnam in 1969. During his time in the service he was exposed to the chemical Agent Orange. "Due to that exposure he now has kidney failure,” said Lucero’s stepdaughter Dana Rojas. She advocates for organ and tissue donation. “Being an organ donor truly is the gift that never stops giving. It truly is giving somebody life,” Rojas said.
